The lateral part of the vestibulospinal tract is the major portion and is composed of fibers originating in the lateral, superior, and inferior vestibular nuclei (primarily the lateral). It projects ipsilaterally down to the lumbar region of the spinal cord. The medial vestibulospinal tract, however, arises from the medial vestibular nucleus and descends within the medial longitudinal fasciculus of the brainstem. The length of these two vestibulospinal tracts differs, with the lateral vestibulospinal tract descending along the entire spinal cord, while the medial vestibulospinal tract stops at the mid-thoracic. Layer A is through the sacral cord.Within the anterior funiculus only the lateral vestibulospinal tract and the pontine and medullary reticulospinal tracts are present. The lateral vestibulospinal tract fibers facilitate reflex activity and control tone in extensor leg and foot muscles. Effects from the vestibulospinal tract on transmission from primary afferents to ventral spino-cerebellar tract neurones. Baldissera F, Roberts WJ. Convergence of vestibulospinal and segmental effects onto spinal interneurones which project to the ventral spino-cerebellar tract (VSCT) neurones has been studied by intracellular recording in VSCT cells.
Vestibulospinal Tracts The vestibulospinal system comprises medial and lateral vestibulospinal tracts (Figs. 24.1 and 24.6). The medial vestibulospinal tract is made up of axons that originate in the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei and descend bilaterally into the spinal cord as part of the medial longitudinal fasciculus. Vestibulospinal Tracts There are two vestibulospinal pathways; medial and lateral. They arise from the vestibular nuclei, which receive input from the organs of balance. The tracts convey this balance information to the spinal cord, where it remains ipsilateral.
Like other descending motor pathways, the vestibulospinal fibers of the tract relay information from nuclei to motor neurons. The results showed that the mean FA of the vestibulospinal tract increased and other metrics decreased for all subjects.

This pathway helps us walk upright. The medial vestibulospinal tract is one of the descending spinal tracts of the ventromedial funiculus of the spinal cord. It is found only in the cervical spine and above. The medial part of the vestibulospinal tract is the smaller part, and is primarily made of fibers from the medial vestibular nucleus.

The fibers are bilateral, but largely uncrossed, and descend in the medial longitudinal fasciculus and anterior funiculus. Medial vestibulospinal tract inhibit spinal motor neurons which supply muscles of neck and upper part of back. Reticulospinal Tract Reticulospinal tracts are two— Medial and lateral.

Tabell 2. The vestibulospinal tract is a neural tract in the central nervous system. Specifically, it is a component of the extrapyramidal system and is classified as a component of the medial pathway. Like other descending motor pathways, the vestibulospinal fibers of the tract relay information from nuclei to motor neurons.

The main descending tracts are the lateral vestibulospinal tract from the lateral vestibular nucleus and the medial vestibulospinal tract from the medial vestibular nucleus. The lateral vestibular tract starts in the lateral vestibular nucleus and descends the length of the spinal cord on the same side.
There are two vestibulospinal tracts that control anti-gravity muscles via LMNs: Medial vestibulospinal tract: originates in the medial vestibular nucleus, to control ipsilateral postural and tone adjustments in response to the vestibular apparatus.

Vestibulospinal tracts. The vestibulospinal tracts do not decussate. There are two vestibulospinal tracts that control anti-gravity muscles via LMNs: Medial vestibulospinal tract: originates in the medial vestibular nucleus, to control ipsilateral postural and tone adjustments in response to the vestibular apparatus. The cells of origin of the lateral vestibulospinal tract lie in the lateral vestibular nucleus. Axons arising from this nucleus descend through the caudal brain stem (you don't see these fibers on the cross sections) and upon reaching the spinal cord course within the ventral funiculus and innervate neurons for the ENTIRE length of the cord. What is the function of the vestibulospinal tract?
